About Us

The place where marine knowledge meets real-world experience.

Vekamar is built around expertise, curiosity, and hands-on experience with the people who work with the ocean every day.

Founded by Virginia Polonio and based in Ireland, Vekamar works with fisheries, aquaculture producers, seafood businesses, and marine organisations around the world — from large-scale industrial fleets to small-scale and artisanal fisheries in data-limited settings. From sustainability and certifications to fisheries management, traceability, and strategic support, our work is always shaped by the realities of the sector and the people who depend on it.

We know that no two fisheries are the same. No two clients are either. That is why we take the time to understand every project, every challenge, and every objective before recommending a way forward.

Meet Our Team

Virginia Polonio Founder, Vekamar

Virginia Polonio is a marine scientist, fisheries expert, and the knowledge behind Vekamar. Her career spans research institutions, international fieldwork, regulatory bodies, and fishing communities themselves — a breadth of experience that is genuinely rare in a sector where most expertise sits in only one of those worlds.

Her academic foundation is rigorous: a B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences, an M.Sc. in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture, and a Ph.D. in Biodiversity and Natural Resources from the University of Oviedo, where her research focused on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems and contributed to the description of new deep-sea coral species.
