Projects on marine ecology, conservation and biodiversity

ATLANTIS – Study of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems in International Waters of the Southwestern Atlantic. Funded by Spanish Institute of Oceanography (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities).

ARSA Project – Assessment of demersal fishery resources and its associated fauna in the Gulf of Cádiz and Bay of Biscay. Funded by the Secretariat General for Fisheries (Government of Spain – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food).

INDEMARES – Inventory and Designation of Natura 2000 Sites in Spanish Marine Waters. Co-financed by the European Commission (LIFE+ programme) and the Government of Spain (Biodiversity Foundation - Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge).

ZOOPUMB – Changes in zooplankton community at elevated pCO2 and temperature: Impact on the efficiency of the biological pump. Funded by European Commission.

CAUSES – Factors controlling the interactions of saxitoxin producing dinoflagellates and copepods. Funded by European Commission.

GIGOVI – Trophic organization and material fluxes in anticyclonic eddies (SWODDIES) in the Bay of Biscay. Funded by Government of Spain (National Programme for Research, Development and Innovation).

OMEX-II – Ocean Margin Exchange phase II. Funded by European Commission. Optimal mating strategies in pelagic copepods: ecological and evolutionary meaning. Funded by European Commission – Marie Curie Actions. Copepodsex – The influence of sexual selection on copepod population dynamics. Funded by European Commission. CCZP – International Project Calanoides carinatus ZooGene Project: species and subspecies identification. Funded by National Science Foundation (USA).

BOCADEVA – Acoustic survey of biomass and daily egg production (MPDH) of small pelagic fishes (Sardina and Anchovy) in the Gulf of Cádiz. Funded by Regional Government of Andalusia (Spain). Effects of hydrographic process on the distribution and feeding of Sardina pilchardus larvae and its consequence on the growth rate in the Asturias coast. Funded by Government of Spain (National Programme for Research, Development and Innovation).

Traceability

At Vekamar, we’ve actively participated in traceability studies for tuna fisheries, with a strong focus on aligning with Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards. Our work has included both fishery-level MSC assessments and Chain of Custody (CoC) certifications, helping ensure transparency and sustainability throughout the supply chain — from catch to consumer.
